Reduces serum triglycerides
The researchers found that adding diosgenin to a high-fat diet lowered serum triglycerides in rats. High blood triglyceride levels are a viable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and a characteristic feature of metabolic syndrome. In a 16-week randomised controlled study, diosgenin in combination with a high-fat diet reduced both serum triglycerides and hepatic fat accumulation, increased AMPK and ACC phosphorylation, and suppressed LXRα signaling. However, these results have so far only been obtained from animal models, and it is unclear whether they are applicable to humans.
